ASAQS Highlights Key Role of Quantity Surveyors in SONA 2025 Infrastructure and Housing Plans

The Association of South African Quantity Surveyors (ASAQS) welcomes the bold infrastructure and housing initiatives announced by President Ramaphosa in his 2025 State of the Nation Address (SONA).

ASAQS Executive Director Nolubabalo Tsolo emphasises that Quantity Surveyors (QSs) are crucial to the success of these projects, with their expertise in cost management, value optimisation, risk mitigation, sustainability, and compliance.

Key Infrastructure Investments

To boost South Africa’s economic growth, the government will invest R940 billion in infrastructure over the next three years, including R375 billion for state-owned enterprises.

The focus will be on upgrading roads, bridges, dams, waterways, and modernising ports and airports. Additionally, affordable housing development will expand into city centres, increasing access to work and business opportunities.

Quantity Surveyors’ Critical Role

QSs are essential in managing costs, ensuring projects stay within budget, and offering valuable financial advice. They help maximize public funds and mitigate financial risks, ensuring projects remain stable even under pressure.

QSs also advocate for sustainable construction practices and compliance with regulations, reducing delays and costly errors.

Protecting Investments

Quantity Surveyors are key to protecting large-scale projects from mismanagement, fraud, and corruption. They provide value engineering to optimize project outcomes and can act as mediators to resolve disputes, ensuring effective investment management.

ASAQS is committed to supporting the government's infrastructure vision, and Tsolo believes that skilled Quantity Surveyors will be integral to the success of the transformative projects outlined in SONA 2025.
